Please note that this page includes crime statistics and Clery compliance for Georgetown’s Hilltop and Capitol Campuses.
The Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, commonly referred to as the Clery Act, requires higher education institutions to:
- Collect, report and disseminate crime data to the campus community and the U.S. Department of Education;
- Provide timely warnings of reported crimes that represent a threat to the safety of students or employees; and
- Make public their campus security policies.
To be in compliance with this legislation, the Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) disseminates public safety alerts to faculty, staff and students, produce an annual crime report and maintain logs of reported criminal incidents.
Annual Security Report
Annual Security Report: The Office of Public Safety annually produces and distributes a Crime Awareness and Campus Security Report outlining campus security policies, procedures and crime statistics. Each report includes statistics for a three-year period.
By October 1 of each year, current students and employees are sent the notification by electronic mail that the current edition of the Crime Awareness and Campus Security report has been posted on this website. Printed copies may be obtained from the GUPD headquarters on the Hilltop Campus on the ground floor of Village C West as well as on the Capitol Campus at 600 New Jersey Ave. NW, Office 102, Washington, DC 20001. The publication and any updates will be posted online.
Annual Fire Safety Report and Fire Log
Annual Fire Safety Report and Fire Log: Also available, in compliance with the Higher Education Opportunity Act, is an Annual Fire Safety Report & Fire Log.
Timely Warnings
Timely Warnings: The Georgetown University Police Department alerts members of the campus community to reported incidents of crime on or near the Hilltop or Capitol campus when there may be a serious or continuing threat to the safety of the campus community, including students, faculty or staff, and/or when such notification may help in apprehending alleged suspects.
Daily Crime Log
Daily Crime Log: The Georgetown University Police Department maintains a daily crime log that records, by the date the incident was reported, all crimes that occur on campus, on or in a non-campus building or property, on public property or within the patrol jurisdiction of GUPD.

Campus Security Authorities
Campus Security Authorities (CSA) are federally mandated crime reporters. CSAs include: 1) any individual who has the responsibility for campus security or monitors entrances to university property; 2) any individual specified by the university to receive reports of offenses; and 3) any officials with significant responsibility for student and campus activities. A full list of CSAs can be found in Georgetown’s Annual Security Report.
CSAs at Georgetown include, but are not limited to: University Police, Title IX Coordinators, Deans, Student Affairs Directors, Athletics Director and Coaches and the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). A full list of CSAs can be found in Georgetown’s Annual Security Report.
CSAs shall report, in a timely manner, any crimes that they are made aware of to GUPD. GUPD will use the information that CSAs submit to classify the crimes properly and ensure they are properly documented in the daily crime log, Annual Security Report, or both. It is therefore imperative that CSAs document the crime being reported with sufficient detail. CSAs have no responsibility to investigate crimes and should not do so.
Resources for CSAs
As a CSA, your role extends far beyond submitting crime data to GUPD. While reporting incidents is a required duty under the Clery Act, you can also provide compassionate, victim-centered support and connect individuals to the care they need.
-
- Offer Immediate Support & Validation: Listen non-judgmentally, prioritize the individual’s physical and emotional safety, and reassure them that help is available.
-
- Share Reporting Options: Help the reporting individual understand their choices—whether that means filing a criminal report with GUPD or MPD, submitting a formal administrative complaint to the Title IX Coordinator or Bias Reporting System, or seeking strictly confidential help without filing a formal report.
-
- Connect Victims to Confidential Resources: Provide immediate referrals to Georgetown’s specialized, confidential support networks:
-
- Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Services (SARP): Crisis intervention, trauma-informed advocacy, and confidential counseling.
-
- Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) & Health Education Services: Confidential mental health therapy, healthcare navigation, and wellness support.
-
- Campus Ministry: Pastoral care, spiritual accompaniment, and confidential support across all faith traditions.

-
- Student Outreach and Support (SOS): Individualized case management for students experiencing personal crises, distress, or complex difficulties. Access resources and Safety Net referrals on the Student Outreach & Support website.
-
- Every Hoya Cares Portal: Refer community members to the Every Hoya Cares website, Georgetown’s central portal for mental health, emotional well-being, and campus wellness options.
-
- Link to Case Management & Wellness Support: Connect students to individualized support networks and central care portals:
-
- Assist with Supportive Measures: Guide individuals to available university resources for supportive measures—such as housing adjustments, academic accommodations, mutual no-contact orders, or GUPD safety escorts—regardless of whether they decide to participate in a law enforcement or disciplinary process.
-
- Submit Timely CSA Reports: Complete the online CSA Crime Reporting Form promptly. This allows GUPD to evaluate whether there is a continuing threat to the broader community (necessitating a Timely Safety Warning) and ensures accurate campus statistics without compromising victim privacy on public logs.
As a CSA, you do not need to investigate the incident or gather evidence. Your priority is to respond with empathy, respect the individual’s autonomy, and ensure they are connected to supportive resources every step of the way.
All other individuals who wish to report crimes should contact GUPD directly to file a police report.
