Crime Statistics and Clery Compliance

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, commonly referred to as the Clery Act, requires higher education institutions to:

To be in compliance with this legislation, the Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) disseminates public safety alerts to faculty, staff and students, produces an annual crime report and maintains a log of reported criminal incidents.

Annual Security Report

Annual Security Report: The Georgetown University Police Department annually produces and distributes a Crime Awareness and Campus Security Report outlining campus security policies, procedures and crime statistics. Each report includes statistics for a three-year period.

By October 1 of each year, current students and employees are sent the notification by electronic mail that the current edition of the Crime Awareness and Campus Security report has been posted on the Georgetown University Police Department website. Printed copies may be obtained from the GUPD headquarters on the ground floor of Village C West. (202) 687-4343. The publication and any updates will be posted online.

Annual Fire Safety Report and Fire Log

Annual Fire Safety Report and Fire Log: Also available, in compliance with the Higher Education Opportunity Act, is an Annual Fire Safety Report & Fire Log. Adobe Acrobat is required to view all reports.

Timely Warnings

Timely Warnings: The Georgetown University Police Department alerts members of the campus community to reported incidents of crime on or near campus when there may be a threat to the safety of students, faculty or staff and/or when such notification may help in apprehending alleged suspects.

The Georgetown University Police Department notifies the campus community through Timely Warnings when crimes are reported to GUPD or the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) that the University believes represents a threat to its students or employees, in a manner consistent with the Campus Security Act. The University uses its best efforts to provide information that is both accurate and helpful, but community members should recognize that the University is able to relay information only as it is reported to GUPD and/or MPD. Timely Warnings are distributed via broadcast email to students, faculty and staff, in addition to being published here.

Timely Warnings are issued via email when incidents reported to GUPD constitute a felony or serious misdemeanor, involve a hate/bias element or involve a serious physical injury and may pose an ongoing threat to members of the university community.

The determination of whether an incident poses an ongoing threat is made by experienced law enforcement professionals, based on the information available about the nature of the incident, including whether or not a perpetrator has been identified, arrested or remains at large.

The decision to issue a Timely Warning is made by law enforcement professionals in consultation with university officials, including representatives from the Office of Student Affairs and IDEAA, who are experienced in responding to the needs of community members who may be victims of serious incidents, sexual assault, hate or bias.

In addition to the Georgetown University Police Department, there are three other law enforcement agencies which operate on the Georgetown University campus: Georgetown University Law Center Department of Public Safety, Georgetown University Hospital Security and the Conference Center Loss Prevention Office. There are also a number of campus security authorities that are responsible for reporting incidents of alleged crimes on and near campus to the Department of Public Safety.

This report form is to be used by Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) to report crimes consistent with the Clery Act. CSAs filing out reports will receive an email providing the Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) the CSA Crime Report case number associated with their reported incident. Note: If the CSA can verify that University Police responded and took a police report, then it is not necessary for the CSA to complete and submit this form.

All other individuals who wish to report crimes should contact GUPD directly to file a police report.

In an emergency, always call Georgetown University Police Department directly at 202- 687-4343 if you are on campus, or 911 if you are off campus.

Campus Security Authorities (CSA) are federally mandated crime reporters. CSAs include: 1) any individual who has the responsibility for campus security or monitors entrances to university property; 2) any individual specified by the university to receive reports of offenses; and 3) any officials with significant responsibility for student and campus activities.

CSAs include, but are not limited to: University Police, Title IX Coordinators, RAs, Student Guards, Deans, Student Affairs Directors, Athletics Director and Coaches and the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). A full list of CSAs can be found on the Georgetown University Police Department website and in Georgetown’s Annual Security Report.

CSAs shall report, in a timely manner, any crimes that they are made aware of to GUPD. GUPD will use the information that CSAs submit to classify the crimes properly. It is therefore imperative that CSAs document the crime being reported with sufficient detail. CSAs have no responsibility to investigate crimes and should not do so.

Please fill out all fields in the form. To send the completed report form electronically, please click on the submit button at bottom of this form. You may also print this form and either fax (202-687-8160) or send via campus mail to the Georgetown University Police Department, Village C West, Attention Clery Act Review Team, who will review and take appropriate action on all CSA reports submitted to them.
